Shipbuilding
Centre
Shipbuilding has been
carried on in Clarenville since 1942 when the Commission of
Government started the Commission of government started the
Clarenville Shipyards. A
“Splinter Fleet” of ten ships of approximately 300 tons each
was turned out and proved very successful in the coastal trade.
During peak production about 250 men were employed but at
the present time there’s not much work in sight.
In 1947 this business
was sold to the Newfoundland shipyards.
Since then about twenty-one vessels have been built under
the capable supervision of Reuben Carpenter.
Master Builder. Much repair work as well has been done to
vessels.
