Did you ever hear of the "The Chronicle Newspaper" an old Clarenville Newspaper from the early 60's?? Neither did I. I was contacted by Peter Marsh a few days ago and he directed me to an article in the Packet where it explains about his finding of two copies of the Chronicle. Peter was kind enough to send me a scanned version of the two copies to put-up on the site. One of the issues dates back to May 11, 1961, while one was published June 8, 1961. In this edition: There is an article in this months The Random Guardian about the early Methodism in Random and Smith's Sound by J. Leawood which was taken from "Monthly Greeting" 1926. Mr. Fred Best is moving from a three year stint at Horwood High to take up the duties of Principal of the U.C. Elementary School in Clarenville. Melissa Smith has just sent me the The Random Guardian from June 1967. In this edition: Town Council to meet with Premier J.R. Smallwood to discuss several items including: Water System, Regional Hospital, New access road in the vicinity of the stadium to connect to the TCH and other items (On page 32 you will find the details of this meeting). Melissa Smith has just sent me the The Random Guardian from May 1967. In this edition: Clarenville Bantam "B" Hockey Tournament one of the plays on this team was Ross Wiseman. Two Horwood High Graduates take part in Centennial Project they are Donald Balsom and Chesley Maidment. By "Dee" deals with Newfoundland gettig a lot of publicity lately most of which is bad. This relates to Sealing and Whales. Their is a report on the first year of the Flying Blades Figure Skating Club in Clarenville. In this edition: They have a profile of Mr. Bill Norcott who ever since moving to Clarenville has played and coached our senior hockey team and has been mainly responsible for the high calibre of Hockey in Clarenville. Councillor Ross Elliott has presented his recommendations for the naming of streets in Clarenville. Town Water System Plebicite to determine whether or not property owners are for or against the proposed water system for Clarenville. As well Council is again approaching the provincial Government for a decision on the Hospital and access road for Clarenville and so much more. A $60.00 will be added to the present taxes to help pay for this. Their is alot of Minor Hockey News in this month Guardin and so much more. We are expanding!! With the addition of The Random Guardian papers we have found that the pages of this website are not wide enough. So over the next few months you may notice some pages are wider than others. I hope to have all pages changed as soon as possible but it will take some time.

Melissa Smith has just sent me the The Random Guardian from January 1967. The Town Council of Clarenville has many plans for 1967 including Town Water System, Regional Hospital, Playground Development, Town Hall and Fire Hall, Street Lights, Street Naming and more. On New Years Eve on the Bear Mountain a Centennial Symbol was turned on. This project is three-fold, as the Chrishmas Star, Easter Cross and the Centennial Symbol. Melissa Smith has just sent me the The Random Guardian from December 1966. Holiday-Inn Clarenville officially opened on Nov. 10th, 1966. Council & Vocational School are building a combination Chrismas Star, Easter Cross and Centennial Symbol to be located on the Bear Mountain. In this edition: Over 6000 people attended the 6th annual Trinity Bonavista Agricultural and Homecrafts Exhibition this year. Premier J. R. Smallwood was on hand to officially open the fair. The Queen of the Fair was Miss Donna Tilly who is 16 years old. Princess of the year was Elizabeth Mercer. The Clarenville Athletic Association has been approved by the Town as the governing body for all sports in Clarenville. The final service in the Old United Church at Shaol Harbour took place on August 28th, 1966 by Rev. R. Tiller. The 6th Annual Agricultural & Homecrafts Exhibition takes place at the Clarenville Stadium from Sept. 27 - Oct 1st, 1966 and so much more. First ever Clarenville Youth Club has been created. A Concrete Floor has ben put in the Stadium which will alllow the stadium to be used all year round and so much more. In this edition: The Town of Clarenville is looking for the Federal Government to establish a Federal Government Wharf and facilities. The Town of Harcourt got electricity extended to their community just before Christmas. Clarenville Council brings down its budget there will be no increase in tax rates for 1965. In this edition: Clarenville is getting ready to welcome all former Newfoundlanders and tourists duringsummer months of come home year. Freighter Runs aground on Foster's Rocks. The freighter was enroute to Clarenville with a cargo of asphalt for NFLD Hardwoods. Mr. Ross Elliott Microwave Technican with CNT is in Toronto on a special course in Colored Television. Melissa Smith has just sent me the The Random Guardian from May 1966. In this edition: On May 26th, 1966 the official opening ceremonies of the new Elementary School took place. This modern 12 room school has a spacious auditorium. The principal is Mr. Leslie Duffett with a teaching staff of ten and 290 pupils. On had for the ceremonies was Premier Hon. Dr. J.R. Smallwood. In this edition: Clarenville Town Council is not happy with the Editorial of that last Random Guardian and feels the editor should be more positive about the goof work being down in the comunity. On Feb 15th, 1966 Councillor Ross Elliott (My Father) resigned as Fire Chief of the Clarenville Volunteer Fire Brigade; and the Chain Store has Ladies stretchy slacks at $2.98 a pair and so much more. In this edition: A new Wather System is approved for Clarenville, a $6 or $8 a month extra taxs will be colected to help pay for the new water and sewage system that will start construction in the spring. Snow Clearing had been been a challenge so far this year but their first rubber tired loader is being used almost continuously. School Tax also continues to be a big topic; and so much more. The Random Guardian was a mimeographed monthly paper publishing local news, birthdays, social, personal and club news, a religious column and advertisements for Clarenville and area. The guardian was started by Jean Balsom cira 1963, then Geneva Cholock took it over and then the last know publishers were Austin and Audrey Hynes who ran it until about 1970 or 71. The Packet which was established 1969 became the official community newspaper and the Guardian folded soon after the packet began.
I would like to Thank Melissa Smith of Clarenville who found her grandmothers "Olive Vardy" copies of The Random Guardian and was willing to share this great find with me so that I could include them on this our website so that all could see.
